Today's reading from Oswald Chamber's "My Utmost for His Highest" was about holiness. The verse is "You shall be holy; for I am Holy." 1 Peter 1:16 (RV)
Great verse; love it! But then Chambers expounds on it*........
"Continually restate to yourself what the purpose of your life is. The destined end of man is not happiness, nor health, but holiness.
The one thing that matters is whether a man will accept the God who will make him holy. At all costs a man must be rightly related to God.
God is not an eternal blessing machine (He, isn't??); He did not come to save men out of pity: He came to save men because He had created them to be holy. The Atonement means that God can put me back into perfect union with Himself, without a shadow between, through the Death of Jesus Christ. (Amen!)
(Here comes the hard (ugh) part):
Holiness means unsullied walking with the feet, unsullied talking with the tongue, unsullied thinking with the mind - every detail of the life under the scrutiny of God."
Wow. That is a tall order. Ugh. I don't even have anything to add to that. It seems a bit overwhelming and that one could easily become legalistic trying to be holy. But it is important for us to strive towards holiness and remember God's grace in the process. I like Chambers' definition of holiness but I need help in processing how to live it out without feeling condemned every time I mess up. Any suggestions?
*I did not include the entire text of this passage from "My Utmost for His Highest."

Sharing the Faith.......
Wow.
I have grown up in a Christian environment all of my life.
Today, I had coffee with a friend who is not a Christian. As the conversation turned towards God and religion, he shared frankly his views with me, which I appreciated.
What do you say to a friend who has no room for God in their life? God is simply a tool that helps certain people in their lives and he really did not need God in his life right now. He was doing OK.
As for sin, well, he tries to learn from his mistakes and then he moves on.
How would you have responded?

Trusting God!
I am working on a lesson for our adult Sunday school class about John 4-6. In my preparations today on God's goodness and on our ability to trust in Him, I came across these verses:
"You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You." Isaiah 26:3
Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal. Isaiah 26:4
“But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.
He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." Jeremiah 17:7-8
I have found so many verses on trust! It is amazing. The Bible has so much to say on trust yet I still walk around everyday not trusting Him. Working on this message has been a great reminder: I can TRUST God EVERYDAY in EVERYTHING.

I am trying to do Beth Moore's Memory Verse challenge. Check out these two links:

So my current verse is a part of Psalms 138:8
"The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me. Your love, Oh Lord, endures forever."
